Fords earn hard-fought win over host Red Devils

CARLISLE, Pa. – A Louis Cipriano three-pointer shortly after the halfway mark in the second half put the Fords ahead for good Saturday afternoon in Haverford College's 74-71 Centennial Conference victory over host Dickinson College.

Haverford (4-8, 2-4 CC) opened up a lead as large as seven points following Cipriano's trey at the 8:50 mark, which had given the Fords a 50-48 lead, but the Red Devils chipped away in the closing minute to pull within one with eight ticks showing on the clock. Cipriano sank a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to push the lead to three then he and the Fords withstood an unsuccessful last second three-point shot from Dickinson's Logan Furr to pull out the road win over the hosts.

Cipriano, one of four Fords to score in double-figures, finished with 12 points and hit both of his attempts from behind the arc. Ian Goldberg posted a team-high 18 points while Cam Baker added 15 and Brett Cohen put 13 into the scorebook. Cohen led Haverford on the glass with nine rebounds, and Baker and Bo Friddell notched three steals apiece.

Gerry Wixtead and Adam Honig each scored 21 points to lead Dickinson's offensive efforts in the loss. Wixtead also led his team in rebounding with 13 boards.

Dickinson opened the game jumping to a quick lead over the visiting Fords and maintained the advantage until late in the opening half. A Baker jumper at 4:49 put Haverford ahead, 23-22, for the first time in the game but the Red Devils wrested the lead right back with a layup on their ensuing possession. A Dickinson foul on Haverford's next time down the floor sent Baker to the free throw line where he sank both of his attempts to give the Fords a one-point lead. The advantage stretched to 32-29 at the intermission.

Haverford leaves Carlisle and heads for Norfolk, Va., where it will take on the second-ranked Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College (10-1) in a non-conference Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.
