HAVERFORD, Pa. – A late second-half rally from the Haverford College men's basketball team fell short of the visiting Blue Jays from Johns Hopkins University in a 66-57 Centennial Conference loss by the Fords in Gooding Arena Saturday afternoon.
Haverford (5-10, 3-5 CC) trailed Hopkins (10-4, 6-1) by 15 points with 2:58 remaining in the second half but pulled to within six points, 61-56, with 21 ticks on the clock. The Blue Jays hit five of their six shots from the free throw line down the stretch to hold off the scrappy Fords.
Hopkins owned a 33-19 halftime lead and grew its advantage to 16 in the early going of the second half before three-pointers from Ian Goldberg then Joel Michel cut the margin to just 10. The Blue Jays pulled away to a 47-23 edge but Haverford rallied to within nine nearing the midway point of the half.
The lead blossomed to 15, first at the 4:19 mark then again as the clock ticked just under the three-minute mark before Baker led the come-back scoring 12 of the team's final 14 points. Louis Cipriano notched the other points during the rally.
Baker finished with team-highs in both scoring and rebounding registering 22 points to go along with nine rebounds. Ian Goldberg added 14 points with Brett Cohen chipping in with eight.
George Bugarinovic hit for the double-double in the Hopkins victory leading the Blue Jays with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Haverford forced 19 turnovers, nine of which were steals, and accumulated 11 points off of turnovers during the loss.
Next up for the Fords is a Wednesday, Jan. 18 match-up at home against visiting Swarthmore College. Game time is set for 8 p.m. and follows the Haverford-Swarthmore women's contest at 6 p.m.
