Fords rally in second half, Mules hang on for win

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Haverford College fought back from an eight-point halftime deficit to pull even with host Muhlenberg College during second-half action of Wednesday night's Centennial Conference men's basketball contest, but the Mules pulled away over the final eight minutes to register a 79-69 win over the Fords.

Trailing 45-37 at the intermission, Haverford (6-12, 4-7 CC) surrendered the opening basket of the second half then ran off a 10-0 spurt to tie the Mules (11-7, 5-6) at the 15:15 mark with Ian Goldberg's layup.

Muhlenberg pulled ahead again but the Fords knotted the score at 54-54 with a little less than 12 minutes left. The Mules were able to build a six-point cushion over the next three minutes but consecutive buckets from Cam Baker and Gibby Graves trimmed the Haverford deficit to just two.

The hosts put the game away, though, by outscoring Haverford 18-10 over the final eight minutes to seal the win.

Goldberg posted a team-high 19 points and added five assists, a steal and a pair of rebounds. He received offensive help from Baker's 14 points and Brett Cohen's 10 points. Cohen also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

Spencer Liddic's 27 points led the Mules on the night. Malique Killing chopped in offensively with 18 points.

The Fords had a solid night shooting hitting 42 percent from the floor but the Mules shot 69 percent in the first half and finished with a 53 percent night in the victory. Haverford forced 13 turnovers and notched 20 points off those Muhlenberg miscues.

The Fords' road doesn't get any easier with their next outing, a Saturday visit to No. 9 Franklin & Marshall College for another Centennial outing.
