Cohen's career-highs helps Fords stop Shoremen win streak

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Brett Cohen recorded career-highs in points and rebounds Wednesday night in Haverford College's 88-75 victory over host Washington College in Centennial Conference men's basketball action.

Cohen was dominant with 30 points and 18 rebounds in helping Haverford (7-13, 5-8 CC) end a Washington (13-7, 9-4) five-game win streak that had vaulted the Shoremen into second place within league standings.

Trailing the Shoremen 64-63 with 12:45 left in the game, the Fords regained an advantage they'd held at halftime when Ian Goldberg's three-pointer put Haverford in front, 66-64, for a slim lead that only grew over the remaining minutes. The Fords out scored Washington 25-11 beginning with Goldberg's trey.

Washington owned the edge for much of the first half and held a five-point lead, 44-39, as the clock ticked under the three-minute mark. A Goldberg free throw pulled the Fords to within four before Cam Baker would eventually hit two from the foul line to move Haverford ahead, 45-44. The Fords closed out the half on a 10-0 run to take a 49-44 lead into the break.

Over the game's final 23 minutes, beginning with the late first-half run, Haverford out scored Washington 49-31. The Fords used a strong night from in close to the basket -- scoring 56 points in the paint -- to shoot 62 percent from the floor in the victory. Cohen helped lead a commanding presence on the glass as he and his teammates out rebounded the Shoremen, 39-28.

Baker was also a force offensively for the Fords scoring 23 while pulling down seven rebounds and adding three assists and four steals. Goldberg finished with 15 points to also crack the double-digit mark and tied for the team lead in assists with Bo Friddell, as the pair chalked up four assists apiece.

Kevin Cunningham was the high-scorer for Washington netting 18 points in the loss while the Shoremen's usual leading scorer, Kevin Breslin, finished with 15.

Haverford will try to keep the momentum going from Wednesday's victory when it hosts McDaniel College in Gooding Arena at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
