SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Haverford College men's basketball program gained two more members into its 1,000-point club as both Ian Goldberg and Cam Baker cracked through the career plateau during Saturday afternoon's 91-80 Centennial Conference loss to host Swarthmore College.
Goldberg, in his final collegiate game for Haverford (9-16, 7-11 CC), entered Saturday's contest two points shy of the mark and blasted his way through with a game-high 30 points against the Garnet (3-22, 3-15). Baker, a junior, was at 995 coming into the game and poured in 20 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals.
The pair are the 13th and 14th Haverford men's players to score more than 1,000 points. Goldberg closes out his career with 1,028 points which is the 10th-most in the program, while Baker will have another season to move up the list from his 13th-best 1,015 points.
Goldberg and Baker led the offensive attack in Saturday's loss at the hands of the Garnet, accumulating 62 percent of the team's point total. Lucas Colombo and Louis Cipriano added nine points apiece. Brett Cohen led the efforts on the boards with 11 rebounds for the Fords.
Gibby Graves gave Haverford the initial advantage in the game with a layup to open the scoring. At the 18:20 mark, Goldberg tied the score at 4-4 with his own layup to equal 1,000 career points.
Baker's milestone basket came with 5:06 remaining in the opening half when his layup pushed his career total to 1,001 points.
Swarthmore broke away from the Fords after Goldberg's tying basket using a 9-0 run to take a 13-4 lead. The Garnet took a 44-37 lead into the halftime break and never trailed on their way to an 11-point victory that ended a 10-game Haverford win streak over its local rival.
Four Swarthmore players reached double-figures in scoring with Will Gates registering a double-double, adding 11 rebounds to his team-leading 20 points. Marc Rogalski also earned a double-double for the Garnet with an 11 rebound, 12-point day at Tarble Pavilion.
The Swarthmore victory narrows the gap Haverford owns in the annual Hood Trophy competition between the two institutions. The Fords head into the conference indoor track & field championship with a 5-3 lead over the Garnet.
