SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Brett Cohen posted his fifth double-double of the season and the Fords had the final shot of the game, but that missed 3-pointer rimmed out leaving Haverford College's men's basketball team heart broken as it fell to host Swarthmore College, 62-59, in Centennial Conference action Wednesday night in Tarble Pavilion.

Cohen posted a game-high 19 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and added three assists, two steals and four blocks to his night. The junior's efforts weren't quite enough for the Fords (5-11, 3-8 CC) who twice, once in each half, rallied from double-digit deficits that the Garnet (5-13, 4-7) had raced out to in front of their home crowd.

With 49 seconds left in the game, Cohen's layup and successful free throw from a foul on the shot pulled Haverford to within a point, 60-59, nearly completing a come-back from 13 points down at the 9:34 mark.

Swarthmore's Will Gates missed a jumper at the other end on the ensuing possession and Gibby Graves pulled down the rebound to provide the Fords with a chance for a go-ahead basket. After a Haverford timeout, Cam Baker's contested jumper was just off the mark with seven seconds remaining. The Garnet's Jay Kober came down with the rebound and was fouled immediately. He sank both free throws to push the Swarthmore advantage to three.

There were still five seconds on the game clock, though, and the Fords pushed the ball up court and set up a tying 3-point attempt by Louis Cipriano. Neither luck nor fate were with Cipriano and Haverford on the shot as it collected only the rim allowing the home team to sneak away with the victory.

Despite the two misses at the end of the game, Haverford had a solid night from the floor, hitting 45 percent of its shots, out shooting Swarthmore which converted only 37 percent. The Fords' night was aided by scoring 46 of their 59 points from in close within the paint.

Along with Cohen's double-digit night, Baker's 13 points, 11 more from James Levine and Lucas Colombo's 10 points added to the Fords' efforts in the offensive end. Kober and Gates each registered 17 points to lead Swarthmore in scoring.

Swarthmore's victory earns the tying half-point in the annual Hood Trophy race between the two rival institutions. The score stands knotted at 3.5–3.5 after Wednesday night's game.

With 13 more rebounds Cohen will become just the 14th player in program history to accumulate 500 rebounds.

Haverford's challenges don't get any easier with their next game as it welcomes Centennial-leader Franklin & Marshall College to Gooding Arena on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m., following the women's game between the same two combatants.
