BALTIMORE – Solid second-half play from Haverford College's men's basketball team wasn't enough Wednesday night as the Fords were unable to claw all the way back from a 12-point halftime deficit in a 73-58 Centennial Conference loss at Johns Hopkins University.

Anthony Reyes' layup with 8:05 remaining in the game drew Haverford (4-6, 0-5 CC) to within eight points, 57-49, but a Hopkins three-pointer from Gene Williams extended the lead back into double figures. Brett Cohen trimmed the margin to nine with a layup the Fords' next time down the court but that would be as close as Haverford would come.

Hopkins (6-6, 3-2) got off to a quick start, scoring the first six points of the game before a Cohen layup three minutes in put Haverford on the scoreboard. The Blue Jays pushed the advantage to seven a few minutes later but the Fords' Matt Sherman drained a three-pointer to cut the deficit to only four.

Fouls were a problem for the visitors, though, as the home team stepped to the free throw line 14 times in the first half, compared to only five trips for Haverford, and the Blue Jays used those opportunities to expand their lead heading into the intermission.

For the game Hopkins converted 18 of its 29 chances at the foul line. Haverford, 10-for-12 for the night from the charity stripe, was sharper but the difference in total opportunities would affect the outcome.

Cohen finished the night with his third double-double in a row leading the Fords with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Lucas Colombo also reached double-digits in scoring with 10 points and added eight rebounds. Both Sherman and Reyes added nine points each.

George Bugarinovic posted a double-double for Hopkins with game highs in points (18) and rebounds (12). Three other Blue Jays also scored in double-digits.

The Fords' season continues Saturday when Haverford travels to Westminster, Md., where it will square off against host McDaniel College in a 3 p.m. conference match-up.
