Season Recap: Youth Makes Great Strides for Men's Basketball in 2016-17

Signature Wins: The Haverford College men's basketball team showed growth throughout the 2016-17 season and perhaps got a glimpse of things to come in the final game of the regular season. Playing a postseason bound Johns Hopkins in Baltimore on the final Saturday of the regular season, the Fords played the role of spoiler in an 80-78 win for their first victory in Baltimore since the 2011 season. Haverford was led by 24 points from first year Jonathan Lang as he scored a career-high 25 points. Sophomore Kahlil Garnes added 21 points in the win that ruined the Blue Jays' chances of a first round bye in the Centennial Conference Tournament the following week.

With a roster that featured 91 percent of its playing minutes coming from the first year and sophomore classes, along with nearly 80 percent of the scoring output, the Fords look primed for the future. Haverford also showed great promise for the years to come with a sweep of Washington College, along with a non-conference victory over Penn State-Schuylkill. Most of those results came with 2016 Rookie of the Year Joe Scibelli missing most of the year. He was leading the conference in both scoring and rebounding before missing the second half of the season.

Season Notes: Matt Sherman scored his 1,000th career point in his home finale against Swarthmore and finished his career with 1,018 points … Sherman is the 16th player in program history to reach the 1,000 point milestone and the 10th to accomplish that feat under head coach Michael Mucci … Joe Scibelli was leading the Centennial Conference in both scoring (20.1 ppg) and rebounding (9.9 rbg) prior to an injury … Scibelli reached double figures in the scoring column in each of his first 11 games, including eight 20-plus point outings … He had seven double-doubles in the first 11 games of the season … Haverford led the Centennial Conference in free throw percentage (74.3%) … Kahlil Garnes set a school record with 12 free throws made in a single game without a miss … Six different times this season, a Haverford player did not miss from the free throw line in a game with six or more attempts at the charity stripe.

Postseason Awards:

Looking ahead: Entering their junior seasons, Kahlil Garnes and Joe Scibelli are both on pace to become the 17th and 18th players in program history to reach the 1,000 point milestone. Jeremy Evans and Josh Fried provide the senior leadership for the Fords who will look to return eight players from this past season's team who were a part of the starting lineup at some point. Evenly split with four starters in each class, all four of the current sophomores have started games during each of their first two seasons.
