BRYN MAWR Pa. - The Haverford College men's basketball team (1-1) used a dominant first half to cruise to a 30-point victory over the Rosemont Ravens (0-2) of the United East, 95-65, on a Wednesday evening under the lights of Alumnae Gymnasium on the campus of Rosemont College.
The run and gun offense of the Fords started out red-hot, as Haverford raced out to an early 7-0 scoring run. In the stretch, Haverford went 3-of-6 from the field, as baskets from Adam Strong-Jacobson and Ali Kaan Bek preluded a Sir William Morman III three-pointer to force a timeout out of the Ravens with 15:40 to go in the opening stanza.
Out of the timeout, the Scarlet and Black continued to show their offensive prowess, going on a sustained, five-and-a-half minute 23-7 scoring run, to push the score to 30-7 with 8:57 to go in half number one. Haverford went 8-for-12 in the lopsided spurt, while connecting on five of eight shots from three-point land. Notable scorers in that stretch included Gaven Marr who dropped eight points, splashing down two three-pointers, while Carter Warren contributed six points off of two shots from behind the arc.
The Ravens began to find the bottom of the net out of their second timeout of the frame, but it was the Fords who closed out the half with a 18-17 edge. Strong-Jacobson continued his stellar first-half performance, putting up six more points in a half that saw Haverford hold on to a 47-25 advantage heading to the intermission.
At the half, Marr and Strong-Jacobson led all scorers with eight points, while Warren, Harry Johnson, and Alex George all ended the first 20 minutes with six points each. The Fords found themselves in control after the opening period after shooting 41.9 percent from the field, and a perfect five-for-five from the charity stripe.
The first 10 minutes of half number two saw a much more even game on the floor, as Haverford held onto a 67-46 lead with 12:03 remaining. A 21-20 scoring stretch favored Haverford as the Fords shot 50 percent from the field, with Marr tacking on seven more points and teammate Seth Anderson recording six points.
Strong-Jacobson slammed down an emphatic slam dunk out of the timeout, as the dunk gave the Fords the energy they needed to close out the final 12 minutes of the game. Haverford outscored the Ravens 28-19 in the remaining 12 minutes, as Morman III added an additional five points to his stat line, and Strong-Jacobson tacked on four more points to bring his game total to 14 points. The Fords went 12-for-30 from the field to round out the victory against Rosemont, while collecting six of their 12 total steals.
Marr paced all players on the floor in points with 18, while pulling down a game-high eight rebounds on Wednesday. For Rosemont, Bruce Black was the player to watch, totaling 16 points in the contest.
A major key to the victory for the Scarlet and Black was the battle on the offensive glass, where the Fords grabbed 30 offensive rebounds as opposed to just eight for the Ravens.
Men's Basketball will remain on the road following their victory over Rosemont, as the Fords will next travel to Williamsport, Pa., to take on the Warriors of Lycoming on Saturday, November 16, at 4 p.m.
