HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's lacrosse team battled visiting Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday afternoon at Swan Field, but the Fords came up short in the Centennial Conference contest, falling by a score of 12-5.
Haverford (1-11, 0-6 CC) saw five different players score in the game and had six different athletes record at least one point. Chase Williams and Brandon Boccellari each tallied two points on the day. Williams scored and added an assist while Boccellari dished out two helpers. Evan Dorman, Nate Becker, Chris Christensen, and Christian Clay each added a score for the Fords. Prior to the start of the game, Haverford honored the seven seniors on the men's lacrosse team.
Franklin & Marshall (11-3, 5-1) scored two or more goals in each quarter and received a hat trick from Billy Kempner. A total of four Diplomats scored at least two goals, while keeper Cameron Setian stopped 14 Haverford shots.
The Fords controlled play during the first quarter as the teams traded scores back-and-forth for a 2-2 tie after one period of play.
Haverford turned up the intensity in the second and fired 10 shots at the goal, but the Diplomat defense was stingy and held the home team scoreless in the second period. Franklin & Marshall took eight shots and put three into the net to take a 5-2 advantage into the halftime intermission.
The Fords again outshot the Diplomats in the third quarter (11-8) and scored twice on two goals by a pair of seniors. Christensen netted the first score of the second half to put his season goal total up to 14. Classmate Nate Becker ended the quarter with a score off of a feed from Williams.
Williams scored his goal midway through the final quarter, but it was not enough as Franklin & Marshall scored seven times in the final two quarters to complete the 12-5 win.
Haverford finished the game with a 38-37 advantage in shots and a 20-17 edge in groundballs, while James Washington made five saves in the second half in his first appearance in goal this season.
The victory for the Diplomats snaps an eight-game winning streak for the Fords against Franklin & Marshall; a streak that began in 2006.
Haverford continues conference action this Wednesday, April 23, as it hosts Ursinus College. Opening faceoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Swan Field.
