Men's Lacrosse Opens 2015 Campaign at No. 7 Cabrini

RADNOR, Pa. – Opening up with Cabrini College for the third straight season, the Haverford College men's lacrosse team fell in its season opener, 16-5. Playing on a snow covered field for much of the game, the No. 7 Cavaliers (1-0) proved their merit of the preseason ranking.

Chase Williams led the Fords' attack with four goals for his first career hat trick in the season opener. Haverford also got a goal Patrick Girard in Saturday's contest, while Brandon Boccellari recorded three assists.. Cabrini was led by five goals from James Magnani and a hat trick from Mike Leydon.

Haverford opened the scoring just 22 seconds into the game when Andrew Dalke took the face off and ground ball at the opening whistle. Cabrini was shortly thereafter whistled for a penalty and Haverford wasted little time as Williams found the back of the net unassisted for the man-up goal.

Cabrini got its attack rolling shortly after and took a 7-1 lead into halftime. The Cavaliers extended their run to 9-1 before the Fords got back-to-back goals from Williams as he recorded the hat trick. Both goals came with man-up opportunities for the Fords at the beginning of the third quarter. Haverford finished the afternoon 3-of-5 on its extra man chances.

After making the score 9-3, the two sides traded goals to make the score 10-4 and eventually 11-5. Girard scored Haverford's first even strength goal of the afternoon with 9:22 left in the third. Williams finished off his offensive display on his first even strength goal of the afternoon with 7:35 left in the third quarter. Evan Dorman was credited with the assist on each of Haverford's final goal. Boccellari finished his day with three helpers after assisting on the first, third and fourth goals of the game.

Despite 14 saves from goalkeeper Eric Caliendo, Cabrini would not allow the Fords to get any closer in the eventual 16-5 win for the hosts. Four different Haverford players caused a turnover during the opener. The Fords also picked up 20 ground balls on the afternoon. Caliendo led the team's effort in that department with six ground balls. Geoff Geppert led the field players in ground balls with four.

The Fords will now turn their attention to the home opener next Saturday against Eastern University at 1 p.m. The Eagles were listed among those teams receiving votes in the national preseason rankings.
