HAVERFORD, Pa. – Continuing its tradition of playing the toughest competition it can find, the Haverford College men's lacrosse team fell against No. 16 York (Pa.), 15-4. Saturday's result on Swan Field snaps the three-game winning streak that the Fords (3-3) have been riding. Meanwhile, York (3-3) broke its three-game skid with the road victory.
The Spartans had eight different players score in the victory. Five York players record two or more goals with a game-high four goals off the stick of Dillon Hannah. The Fords received a second period tally from Isaac Krier, third period goal from Chase Williams and won the fourth period with goals from Patrick Girard and Paul Hackett.
After a thrilling come-from-behind win against Gwynedd Mercy, during which the Fords faced a 4-0 deficit after the first period, Haverford found itself in the same position Saturday. However, the York attack was unable to be contained in the second period and took a 7-1 lead into halftime. Haverford's first goal of the afternoon came from Krier, his seventh of the year, on an unassisted tally.
Williams scored his ninth goal of the year to start the third period for Haverford, but the visiting Spartans ran off seven straight goals after the opening score of the second half to carry a 14-2 lead into the final period. Girard assisted the Fords' goal in the third. Haverford closed out the game with a 2-1 fourth period victory.
With the offensive tempo slowing down, Girard scored his fifth goal of the season in unassisted fashion midway through the fourth to finish with three points. York answered with a goal on its only man-up opportunity of the afternoon. Haverford closed out the day's scoring with a goal from Hackett – his fourth of the season – with three minutes to play in the game. Freshman Jack Sollee was credited with his first collegiate assist on the game's final goal.
York goalie Caleb Abney picked up the victory as he made six saves on nine shots in his 52:45 of playing time. Landry Marshall came on to finish the game for York. He stopped three of the four shots on goal he faced. Eric Caliendo took the loss in goal for Haverford. He made eight saves on the afternoon.
Saturday's game was the final non-conference meeting of the regular season. Centennial Conference play opens up for the Fords next Saturday with a road trip to No. 8 Gettysburg. Opening faceoff is set for 1 p.m. in that conference showdown.
