GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Haverford College men's lacrosse team opened up the always challenging Centennial Conference schedule with one of its toughest opponents, No.5 Gettysburg. In the road contest, the Bullets (7-0, 1-0 CC) showed why they are unbeaten nearly midway through the year with a 14-3 win over the Fords (3-4, 0-1 CC) on Saturday.
Haverford got a goal from Isaac Krier in the first period, tying the game early. Geoff Geppert added the game's final two goals as the Fords finished with a 2-2 final period score. Gettysburg's Robby Maddux scored a game-high five goals to pace the Bullets' attack. Bijan Firouzan also scored three goals from his spot in the midfield.
Gettysburg got the scoring started quickly after taking the opening faceoff. Just 53 seconds into the contest, Maddux tallied for the home team. Maddux, who has scored 26 goals through seven games this season, was set up by Brendan Morris for the game's first goal.
Haverford settled in defensively after the opening strike. The Fords leveled the game when Krier scored his eighth goal of the season during an unassisted attempt. His game-tying shot came after a save from Eric Caliendo in net and subsequent clear.
Caliendo faced heavy pressure in front of his goal as Gettysburg took 40 shots on the afternoon and put 24 of those attempts on goal. The Fords' junior came up with 10 saves in the contest. His defense also caused seven turnovers on the afternoon. Paul Hackett, Sommer Stein, and Caliendo each had two caused turnovers for Haverford. Caliendo also picked up a team-high seven ground balls, while defender Brandon Smith added five pickups.
Bullets' goalie Tim Brady held the Fords off the scoreboard for a large stretch after Krier's goal with nine saves during his time in net. He eventually ceded the goal to Ryan Goodall. However, the Fords did score the contest's final two goals off the stick of Geppert. His two tallies gave Haverford an even fourth period with its nationally-ranked opponent. Geppert's first goal came unassisted against Brady, while his final tally came off a feed from Jack Russ. The assist for Russ was the first of his career. Geppert now has a team-leading 12 goals for Haverford on the season.
The men's lacrosse team will have two games on Swan Field this week against Centennial Conference opposition. On Wednesday, Washington College will come to campus for a 7 p.m. faceoff. McDaniel will make the weekend trip for a 1 p.m. start time next Saturday.
