Men's Lacrosse Denied in OT vs. Washington College, 8-7

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's lacrosse team came up on the wrong end of its first overtime battle of the season, dropping a tough 8-7 contest to defending Centennial Conference Champion Washington College.

The Fords used a balanced attack to rally back from an early deficit as eight different players recorded a point in Wednesday's Centennial Conference meeting. Six different players scored a goal as Jack Bodine was the only player to tally twice, finishing with two goals and one assist. Andrew Dalke also finished with three points as he scored a goal and assisted on two others.

Haverford found itself trailing 4-1 late in the first period after the Shoremen attack got off to a quick start with each of those early tallies coming in the first eight minutes of play. Dalke's unassisted goal just over three minutes into the game was Haverford's first score of the contest and his first goal of the season. The Fords brought the deficit back to two goals when Dalke set up Bodine's first tally of the day with 2:36 to play in the opening period.

Bodine's first goal of the game started a stretch of three straight for the Fords as they tied the game at four-all during the second period. Patrick Girard capitalized on one of Washington's seven penalties during the game with a man-up goal. His sixth goal of the season was set up by Tav Hafner's first assist of the year. Less than a minute later, Isaac Krier scored his ninth goal of the season with the help of Bodine and the Fords found themselves locked at four-all with 12:41 remaining in the half. However, the Shoremen carried a 5-4 lead into the break with an own goal from Haverford.

The third period belonged completely to the Fords as they tallied the only two goals and took a 6-5 lead into the final period. Bodine's second goal of the game and fifth of the season came just five minutes into the second half with Krier helping out for his third assist of the season. After nearly eight minutes gone by since the last goal, Chase Williams recorded his 10th goal of the year to give Haverford its first lead of the night. Paul Hackett's second assist on the year set up the go-ahead goal.

This time it was Washington College's turn to comeback and the Shoremen would do so with a goal just under five minutes into the fourth period. However, Geoff Geppert answered that latest challenge with his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Dalke also assisted on the Fords' final goal that made the score 7-6 for their second lead of the evening.

The Fords had a chance to go up by a pair of goals with just over four minutes to play when Washington's Brad Wollman was called for two pushing penalties in the same offensive sequence. He was sent off for a minute, but Haverford had its only shot attempt blocked down and picked up by the defense before the penalty expired. In goal, Eric Caliendo came up with two of his 12 saves with the Fords holding the 7-6 lead. However, luck was not on Haverford's side as the Shoremen's Stephen Luck scored with 1:40 to play in regulation.

Haverford won the faceoff to start the overtime, but a turnover led to Washington College having the first offensive chance. Once again, luck was not with the Fords as the Shoremen's attacker scored his 17th goal of the season for the overtime winner.

In addition to Caliendo's 12 saves, the Fords forced 20 turnovers on the defensive end of the field. Brandon Smith, who took all 19 faceoffs for Haverford in the game, caused four of those giveaways, while Andrew Fenaroli and Hackett each came up with a pair of caused turnovers. Smith also collected nine ground balls.

Men's lacrosse will look to bounce back from its overtime loss this weekend as McDaniel comes to campus on Saturday. Opening faceoff in that game is set for 1 p.m.
