Season Review: Men's Lacrosse Continues Upward Trend

Season Review: Men's Lacrosse Continues Upward Trend

Signature win: It was another year of tremendous strides for the Haverford College men's lacrosse team in 2016. One of the major benchmarks the team hit in its bid to return to the top of the Centennial Conference standings was the 9-8 win against Dickinson. The Fords had to wait an extra day due to inclement weather, but that win marked Haverford's victory over the Red Devils since the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

Dickinson came into the Centennial Conference showdown receiving votes in the national poll, but it was Haverford who prevailed in the back-and-forth contest. The Fords led 6-5 at the half and built that margin to 9-7 heading into the fourth quarter. From there, the top flight defense took over behind six saves from All-American goalie Eric Caliendo. Rob McLallen led the attack with three goals in the win as six other players also tallied in the victory on Swan Field.

Season notes: Haverford increased its win total for the second straight season … Eric Caliendo was named an honorable mention All-American to become the team's first All-American since the 2013 season … Haverford's 6.93 GAA was the team's fourth best in program history and lowest since the 2007 season … Eric Caliendo finished the year with a 7.01 GAA after being subbed out late in games that the Fords held sizable leads … His GAA was the third best in program history and the lowest mark since fellow All-American K.C. Peterson '07 … The Fords led all their Centennial Conference peers with 12 student-athletes named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll … Eric Caliendo was the first player in program history to be named the Centennial Conference Scholar-Athlete in men's lacrosse.

Looking ahead: Haverford will return seven of its nine players who recorded at least 10 points for the attack unit, including rising junior Isaac Krier who led the team with 21 goals. Rising sophomore Rob McLallen led the team with 15 assists as a freshman. In total, six of the Fords' top nine point producers will be entering just their sophomore or junior seasons in 2017. Defensively, the team will have to replace Caliendo as a four-year starter in goal. All-conference defenders Chandler Todd and PJ Jackson will be looked to as leaders of that unit.
