Men's squash battles but falls to visiting Hoyas

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's squash team put up a fight, but the Georgetown University Hoyas came away with the win, defeating the Fords 6-3 Saturday afternoon on the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center squash courts.

Georgetown (1-0) clinched the match while a pair of Fords were still on the courts, but those final two matches went Haverford's way in lengthy, five-game battles.

Chris Tyson picked up Haverford's second point with a tough match against Georgetown's Chris Ahn at No. 3, and Alex Spiliotes earned the Fords' final point with a win over Pat Trousdale at No. 1.

Tyson dropped his first game to Ahn, 11-7, but the Haverford junior changed strategies incorporating his short game to forge ahead with 11-8 and 11-9 wins. Ahn pulled back even in the fourth game with a 12-10 victory that played out in point-for-point fashion, but Tyson fought back with an 11-6 game-five win to clinch the match.

Spiliotes broke on top quickly over Trousdale with a dominating 11-2 win, but the Hoya countered what had worked for Spiliotes in the opener before the Haverford senior would eke out a narrow 14-12 win to go up 2-0 in the match.

Trousdale rallied in the third game with an 11-8 win. In the fourth, neither player was able to extend a lead to greater than one point until Trousdale capitalized on an error to pull things even with a 12-10 win.

Spiliotes trailed 5-7 midway throughthen 6-9 late in the fifth and final match, but outlasted Trousdale rallying for the game's final five points to steal back the game, 11-9, and match.

Next up for the Fords is a trip to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where they will take on Ithaca and host Vassar on Saturday, Nov. 5.
