Men's squash downs Swarthmore in local rivalry

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College's men's squash team rolled to a 7-2 triumph over visiting Swarthmore College in a local rivalry match Saturday afternoon in the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center.

The Fords (3-13) broke out to a 6-0 lead before the Garnet (6-6) would pick up their first of two consecutive wins.

Four Haverford players took down Swarthmore opponents by 3-0 scores with Zef Konst posting the fastest win of the quartet, taking down Sudarsha Gopaladesikan by 11-2, 11-2 and 11-1 scores in the No. 3 position. Chris Tyson, recording the initial Haverford win on the day, surrendered just seven points in a win at No. 4 and Charlie Michele gave up only 12 in his victory at No. 6.

Alex Spiliotes had more of a battle on his hands at No. 1 for the Fords, fighting off Tarit Rao-Chakravorti with scores of 11-6, 11-7 and 11-6.

Haverford's three other victories -- from Andy McComas (No. 2), David Chang (No. 8) and Zeek Barnett (No. 9) -- were by 3-1 counts.

Harry Gallway played the longest match of the day, falling to Swarthmore's Colin Smith 3-2 at No. 7 in a back and forth match-up. Gallway took the first and third games with Smith squaring things at 2-2 by taking the second and fourth games. Unsurprisingly, the deciding game took extra points before Smith would complete his comeback with a 14-12 game five win.

The Fords close out their regular season slate on Saturday, Feb. 11 with a home match against No. 72 Penn State. The season culminates with the Collegiate Squash Association Team Championship on Feb. 17-19 at the University of Pennsylvania.
