Fords take down Virginia to win F Division championship

PHILADELPHIA - Continuing its late-season roll, The Haverford College men's squash team claimed a 6-3 victory over the No. 45 Virginia Cavaliers to capture the championship of the Collegiate Squash Association (CSA) Serues Cup (F Division) bracket Sunday afternoon on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

The 42nd-ranked Fords won their fifth contest in a row to end the season at 7-13 while the Cavaliers finished with a 5-4 record.

The championship was a battle at every position in the lineup as only two of the matches went the minimum three games. Senior Zef Konst at No. 3, junior Chris Tyson at No. 4, and junior Charlie Michele at No. 5 all recovered from game one losses to secure victories in four games. Despite a setback in game three, Robbie Thompson at No. 6 persevered and came back with a strong 11-5 effort in game four to close his collegiate career on a high note.

Junior Andy McComas, playing at No. 2, rallied from being down two games to one by claiming an 11-6 victory in game four, and pulling out a tight 11-9 game five over Matthew Brown.

Working overtime for Haverford on the afternoon, David Chang at No. 9 dug deep to claim a 12-10 win in the deciding game of a nail-biting five-game affair.

Prior to Sunday's contest against Virginia, the Fords took down Bryant University and the University of Illinois-Champaign during the course of the weekend on their way to the championship.
