Men's squash opens season with pair of wins at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Haverford College men's squash team opened its season in impressive fashion with a pair of victories at Vassar College Saturday afternoon. The Fords began the day with a 9-0 sweep of Fordham University before taking down host Vassar, 8-1.

Haverford (2-0) made quick work of the Rams (1-1) as Andy McComas at No. 1, Laurenson Ward at No. 3, Nathan Vestrich-Shade at No. 5, Matt Rohn at No. 8 and Bret Marlowe at No. 9 all secured victories in three games. Playing at No. 7, Jonathan Nguyen shook off a loss in game one to get past Carlos Ortiz Gutierrez in four games (8-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-6) while Robbie Thompson, playing at No. 6, dug deep to outlast Paul Monaghan (11-4, 4-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7).

The Fords continued their impressive play against the host Brewers (0-2) as eight of Haverford's nine players rolled to victory in three games. Thompson, at No. 6, only relinquished four points to Daniel Doctor (11-2, 11-1, 11-1) while Rohn (11-1, 11-1, 11-4), at No. 8, and Marlowe (11-0, 11-2, 11-5), at No. 9, gave up only six and seven points, respectively.

Ranked 40th in the collegiate squash preseason rankings, the Fords welcome Connecticut College to the Gardner Integrated Athletic Center squash courts on Saturday, Nov. 17 for their initial home contest of the season. The match begins at 10 a.m.
