Men's squash sweeps through visiting Swarthmore

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Saturday afternoon's men's squash contest between No. 42 Haverford College and visiting Swarthmore College evolved into a sweeping victory for the host Fords as they captured the match, 9-0, without losing a game to the 45th-ranked Garnet.

Haverford (3-1) rolled to 3-0 wins in all nine matches beginning with senior Robbie Thompson's dominating 11-1, 11-2, 11-6 victory at No. 6 over Chun Hei Wong of Swarthmore (3-6-1). Thompson's victory was bittersweet as it was his final collegiate match since the Haverford senior graduates from Haverford this December.

Will Greer kept the rout rolling for the Fords with a win (11-3, 11-7, 11-3) at No. 9 over the Garnet's Prashant Arya, followed by Matt Rohn's narrow victory (11-2, 13-11, 11-8) over Swarthmore's Jamie Ivey at the No. 8 slot.

Nearer the top of the ladder, Peter Boal added Haveford's fourth point of the day with a strong 11-4, 11-2, 11-6 victory at No. 4 over Ben Mercado. Chris Tyson (pictured, right) clinched the match with his sweeping (11-5, 11-7, 11-5) win in the second slot over Swarthmore co-captain Faraz Hayat.

Laurenson Ward, Jonathan Nguyen and Charlie Michele continued Haverford's strong play with wins at Nos. 5, 7 and 3, respectively. By the time Andy McComas stepped onto the court for the day's final match, against Jason Hua at No. 1, the team results had long been decided.

Saturday's contest put a close to the Fords' fall slate. Haverford will continue the season following the inter-semester break by traveling to Amherst, Mass., for the Pioneer Valley Invitational on Jan. 18-20, 2013.
