Haverford sweeps final date downing UVa and Colgate

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The final date on the regular season schedule brought a pair of wins for the Haverford College men's squash team as the 28th-ranked Fords downed No. 37 Virginia, 7-2, in the early match Saturday at the Gardener Integrated Athletic Center then closed with a 9-0 victory over the visiting club team from No. 36 Colgate University.

Haverford (9-5) will enter the College Squash Association team championship on Feb. 22-24 in New Haven, Conn., as winners of three of its past four matches.

Against the Wahoos from Virginia (11-5), Haverford scored wins at the Nos. 3 through 9 spots in the ladder to roll to the victory. Chris Tyson, Nathan Vestrich-Shade, Charlie Michele, Laurenson Ward and Will Greer each raced to 3-0 victories during the match.

Jonathan Nguyen faced the biggest challenge from a Wahoo in scoring a Haverford point, picking up wins in the first two games against Virginia's Jack Pellington at No. 7 before dropping the next two to square the match at 2-2. Nguyen fought Pellington point by point in the final game and earned his team a match-clinching point with an 11-9 win.

The late match against Colgate (1-6) finished even more quickly as eight of the Fords' nine points came by way of 3-0 wins.

Nguyen was again the outlier winning a 3-2 match in the seventh spot to complete the shutout over 'Gate.

Four seniors -- Tyson, Michele, Peter Boal and Andy McComas -- played their final matches on the GIAC squash courts Saturday. Tyson and Michele both registered two wins on the day while Boal and McComas were 1-1.
