WALLINGFORD, Conn. – The opening matches of the College Squash Association national tournament commenced Friday with the 28th-ranked men from Haverford College falling, 9-0, to No. 29 Georgetown College in the first round of the Conroy Cup/D Division.

The Fords (9-6) will move into the consolation bracket where they will battle No. 32 Tufts University (7-13) on Saturday at 1 p.m. Georgetown (6-4) will take on Colby College, which defeated Tufts on Friday, in the winners side of the eight-team bracket of schools ranked 25th through 32nd in the nation.

Andy McComas and Charlie Michele forced their Hoya opponents to stretch all the way to five games for victories Friday afternoon in the match hosted on the courts of Choate Rosemary Hall.

In the No. 5 slot, Michele played disciplined squash to earn a 2-0 lead behind a pair of 11-9 victories over Georgetown's Kevin Donlin. But Donlin altered his tactics heading into the third game making it difficult for Michele to close out the match which eventually ended in a come-from-behind 3-2 Hoya victory.

McComas found himself trailing 2-0 after a pair of narrow losses in the opening games against Nicholas Kourides at No. 1. As with the match at No. 5, a rally was afoot as McComas steamrolled to an 11-5 win in the third game then evened the match with an 11-9 victory in the fourth.

Kourides, however, was able to hold off the hard-charging McComas in the deciding fifth game, eking out an 11-7 win over the Ford to close out the match by a 3-2 count.

Chris Tyson had a spirited match at No. 3 against Georgetown's James Calello. The opening game stretched beyond regulation totals with Calello escaping with a 13-11 win, followed by another two-point victory (11-9) in the second. Tyson put fourth a valiant effort in the third but finally succumbed by a score of 11-6.

Saturday afernoon's contest with the Jumbos is against a squad which dropped Friday's match to the D Division's top seed by a 6-3 count.
