Kevin Yan Advances into Round of 16 at ITA Southeast Regional

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Kevin Yan headlined day one of the ITA Southeast Regional for the Haverford College men's tennis team as he advanced to the Round of 16 in Championship Singles with a pair of hard-fought victories. The Fords also saw Pranav Krishnan (B1 Singles) and Jun Mo (B3 Singles) move into the semifinals of singles play, while the pairings of Patrick Kley/Arnav Patodia (B1 Doubles) and Jason Edmonds/Abhinav Nallapareddy (B2 Doubles) advanced to the semifinals of their brackets.

Yan started his day with a thrilling three-set victory over Cole Tecce of Mary Washington. Down a set to start, the senior captain bounced back with consecutive 6-3 set victories. Another tough matchup awaited Yan in the Round of 32, but he was able to top reigning Centennial Conference Rookie of the Year and ninth-seeded Leonid Sorkin of Dickinson by a 7-6 (6), 7-5 final. He will look to continue his run through the championship singles bracket with his Round of 16 match Saturday against fourth-seeded Revanth Boppano of Carnegie Mellon which is scheduled for an 11:45 a.m. start. Yan needs two more singles victories to advance to Championship Sunday.

David Kong joined his classmate in the Round of 32 of Championship Singles as he defeated Carnegie Mellon's Joshua Pinckney in straight sets before falling to fifth-seeded Harrison Hunter of Christopher Newport. George Jiang was also drawn into Championship Singles, but fell to fifth-seeded Harry Shepard of Washington & Lee. Jiang will look rally back in consolation singles on Saturday afternoon.

Advancing to the semifinals of their respective B draws were Pranav Krishnan and Jun Mo. Krishnan dropped his opening set of the B1 draw, but won his opening match following a 10-4 advantage in the tiebreak before downing his opponent from Christopher Newport in straight sets. He will face Noah Cheng of Swarthmore in the semifinal round Saturday morning. With an eight-man B3 bracket, Mo needed just one victory to advance to the semifinals. Nevertheless, he too was a down a set before a 6-4 win in the second and a 10-7 victory in the tiebreak.  He will play his semifinal at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. In B2 Singles, Rob Kresch and Arnav Patodia will look to rebound in B2 consolation action. Kresch was stopped in a 10-point tiebreak while Patodia dropped a second-set tiebreak during a pair of tough defeats.

Friday's action get started in doubles where the Fords sent two pairings into the semifinals. Patrick Kley and Arnav Patodia received a Round of 16 bye in B1 Doubles action before picking up a strong 8-5 victory against Salisbury. Jason Edmonds and Abhinav Nallapareddy also had a bye in the B2 Doubles bracket and won their quarterfinal match with a convincing 8-3 score against Bridgewater. Both of those doubles pairings will be back on the courts first thing Saturday with their semifinal matches scheduled for 8 a.m.

Haverford also had three pairings in Championship Doubles. George Jiang and David Kong won their Round of 64 match by an 8-3 score against Mary Washington before falling to the fifth-seeded pairing. Pranav Krishnan and Kevin Yan had a bye into the Round of 32 but were tripped up by Centennial Conference foe Ursinus. Rob Kresch and Jackson Trevor will return Saturday in consolation action after an 8-3 setback in their first match.
