HAVERFORD, Pa. - The 39th-ranked Haverford College men's tennis team (8-7, 3-2 CC), dropped a Centennial Conference match to No. 18 Johns Hopkins (11-5, 6-1 CC) by an 8-1 final score on Friday. The contest was held at the Bettye Marshall and Norman B. Bramall Tennis Courts, before being moved inside to Alumni Field House due to rain during singles play.
Johns Hopkins got off to a quick start in the match, by taking all three doubles points from the Fords. On court one, the team of Marco Azar and Daniel Ardila prevailed over Stefan Johnson and Marko Arboleda 8-4, before the JHU pairing of Hanyu Liu and Chakor Sankaran Rajendra took down Adam Chow and Justin Minerva 8-4 on court three, to collect the first two points of the contest. On court two, Johns Hopkins closed out doubles play, after the team of Allen Gong and Pranav Gadiraju defeated James McKenzie and Kirin Eicher 8-2, as the Blue Jays held a 3-0 lead headed into singles play.
Gong earned his second win of the day and first singles win of the match for Johns Hopkins, after dispelling McKenzie 6-4, 6-2, in flight four, to give JHU a 4-0 lead. In the third flight, Liu got past Johnson 6-3, 6-2 for the clinching fifth point for Johns Hopkins, before Arboleda handed Haverford their first point of the contest, vanquishing Ardila 7-6 (9-7 tiebreaker), 6-2.
Up 5-1, the Blue Jays gained point number six, after Sankaran Rajendra denied Aiden Kim 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6 super tiebreaker), before Azar turned away Minerva 8-2 in the fifth flight, to give JHU a 7-1 lead. In the sixth flight Gadiraju claimed a 8-3 win over Niki Lavu, to seal the 8-1 victory for the visitors.
Men's Tennis now faces a quick turnaround for their next match, as the Fords host Franklin & Marshall Saturday, April 20, at 12 p.m.
Prior to the match, a Senior Day ceremony will be held to honor Kirin Eicher and Adam Chow for their hard work and dedication over the past four seasons.
