BAYONNE, N.J. – The 32nd-ranked Haverford College men's tennis team (6-2) defeated No. 39 Stevens (4-5) on Friday afternoon by a score of 5-2 at the Bayonne Tennis Courts. The win evens the all-time series between the two programs at 17-17, in a historic series dating back to 1923.
Haverford started strong in doubles play. On court two, Marko Arboleda and Owen Kilmer earned the first victory of the day with a commanding 6-1 win over Vivekraj Harinarayan and Matthew Luzzi. The Fords then secured the crucial doubles point on court one, as James McKenzie and Justin Minerva defeated Olof Persson and Max-William Kanz 6-3. Stevens claimed a win on court three, where Aidan Miller and Samvid Andhare edged out Teo Bortan and Zach Miano, but the Scarlet and Black took a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
In singles action, Haverford quickly extended their advantage. On court six, Chait Krishna cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Luzzi to give the Fords their second point. The Ducks responded on court two, where Andhare defeated Kilmer 6-2, 6-4, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Minerva delivered a crucial third point for Haverford, outlasting Mihir Pacha 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on court three. Arboleda then clinched the match for the Fords with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Kanz on court one.
McKenzie added to Haverford's tally with a comeback win on court five, overcoming Harinarayan 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 for his second victory of the day. The hosts earned their second and final point on court four, where Miller defeated Niki Lavu 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
After seven competitive matches, Haverford emerged with a 5-2 victory, continuing their strong season with a win over a tough Stevens squad.
Men's Tennis will return to action Saturday, March 29, in Gettysburg, Pa., as the Fords take on the Bullets at 12:00 p.m., to open up Centennial Conference play.
