HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College men's tennis team is pleased to officially announce the additions of Matt Cherner-Ranft to the coaching staff for the upcoming 2024-2025 season.
Cherner-Ranft brings over 20 years of tennis experience to Haverford, both as a player and a coach. After a three-year stint at UNLTD Tennis Academy, he became a private tennis instructor, a role he continues to hold today, developing and leading tennis and fitness training programs for district, sectional, and nationally ranked players.
Before transitioning to independent coaching, Cherner-Ranft coached at the high school level, leading the girls' varsity tennis team at the Dwight School in New York, N.Y., for the 2018 season. Prior to that stint, he spent three years coaching both the boys' and girls' varsity tennis teams at North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka, Illinois.
Earlier in his career, Cherner-Ranft served as the Director of Junior Development at Quogue Field Club on Long Island for four years, where he provided skills instruction and motivational coaching in individual and group settings for men, women, and children.
His coaching career began right next door at the Haverford School, where he was the head coach for the middle school and junior varsity teams and the assistant coach for the varsity team.
When asked about the addition of Cherner-Ranft, men's tennis head coach Eric Spangler was quoted as exclaiming, "I'm thrilled to welcome Matt to our coaching staff! He brings a tremendous depth of knowledge with over 20 years of high-level playing and coaching experience." He went on to note, "As a former high academic division I athlete at Cornell, his mentorship will be invaluable in helping our players excel in both academics and sport."
As a student-athlete, Cherner-Ranft was a four-year number one singles player and a team captain for one season at the Haverford School before becoming a captain for the Cornell men's tennis team.
Men's Tennis will kick off their 2024 Fall slate with the Haverford Invitational, where the Fords will challenge the likes of Vassar, NYU, Hamilton, and Stevens, throughout the three-day competition, beginning on Friday, September 20, at 4 p.m.
