Men's track & field kicks off indoor season at Jack Pyrah meet

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The 2012-13 indoor track & field season kicked off for Haverford College's men Saturday at the Jack Pyrah Invitational hosted by Villanova University in Haverford's Alumni Field House.

Maury Lander-Portnoy narrowly missed an indoor personal best in the shot put at his first meet of the winter season, registering a best toss of 11.42 meters (37 feet, 5.75 inches) for an eighth-place finish.

Sam Callon led a trio of Haverford sprinters across the finish in the 300-meter run, taking 14th with a time of 37.47 seconds. Jonathan Yellets was 20th (38.12) and James Torain finished in 23rd (38.44). Yellets, a freshman, also competed in the 60-meter dash posting a time of 7.47 seconds in his first collegiate meet.

Another freshman, Jeff Ainsley, also competed in two events Saturday and the newcomer was fourth in the 60-meter high hurdles and third in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.85 meters (6-0.75).

A quartet of Fords ran in the 800 with senior Greg Krause leading the four and coming within striking distance of his indoor best (2:00.31) with a seventh-place time of 2:02.53.

The next outing for the Fords will be the Haverford Invitational on Dec. 15 in the Field House.
