McElligott Invite provides another strong day of tuning up for Fords

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The indoor track & field team from Haverford College picked up a number of strong performances Saturday afternoon at its Seamus McElligott Invitational hosted by the Fords at The Gary Lutnick Tennis & Track Center.

Included in Saturday's results was Brian Sokas' mile race which earned the Haverford senior the meet's McElligott Award for most outstanding single performance at the Invitational.

Sokas toed the starting line for his first race of the indoor season then reeled off a personal best time of 4 minutes, 18.54 seconds to finish second in the event and produce the Centennial Conference's sixth-fastest mile this winter. Teammate David Roza finished third in a personal best 4:19.16 which is fifth fastest in the league.

Sprinter Jonathan Yellets popped a career-best 7.28 seconds for second place in the 60-meter dash then raced to a winning time of 51.67 seconds in the 400. His time in the longer distance is second in the Centennial's performance rankings within the event.

Jeffrey Ainsley continued his solid sophomore season with second-place finishes in the 60-hurdles and 200.

The Fords nabbed third and fourth in the 800 with Gebby Keny and Soren Rasmussen, respectively, doing the honors. Rasmussen's time of 1:59.03 was a personal best.

Also running to a collegiate best was Sam Fujimori in the 5,000. His time of 15:08.17 was good for fourth place Saturday.

In the shot put, Robert Parry recorded a personal best with a throw of 11.78 meters (38 feet, 7.75 inches) which is the 11th-best toss in the Centennial this winter.

Haverford has one more tune-up on the schedule, the Keogh Invitational at the Tennis & Track Center on Feb. 22, before the Fords host the two-day Centennial championship meet at March 1-2.
