STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Haverford College men's track & field team opened up the 2020 portion of the indoor campaign with a strong showing at the NYC Gotham Cup at the Ocean Breeze Complex on Staten Island.
Junior Jack Hunter raced to a third place finish in the 5,000 meters, crossing in a career-best time of 15:18 while David Watt was sixth, crossing the line in a time of 15:26.23, also a new personal best for the senior. Sam McCalpin crossed in seventh in the 3,000 meters, finishing in a time of 8:48.81, a new career best time for the senior co-captain. Sophomore Peter Buckley finished in 18th in the event, crossing in 9:04.03.
In the mile, junior Matt Katz impressed with a fourth place finish, crossing in a career-best time of 4:18.03. Sophomore Nico Tripeny was fifth overall, crossing in a career-best 4:21.11. First-year Nathan Leighninger was 17th in a time of 4:32.93 to round out the largest Haverford contingent in any one event. Junior Gene Perry finished 79th in the 400 meters, crossing in 58.87. Perry also ran in the 200 meters for the Fords, crossing in 41st place with a career-best time of 24.30. The 60-meter dash saw senior co-captain Cameron Albrecht cross in a time of 7.91 for a 63rd place performance.
Senior co-captain Hiro Kawakatsu was the 17th place finisher in the 800 meters, crossing in a time of 2:01.29, while first year Kennedy Mutai was the 48th finisher in a time of 2:10.54. In field events, Albrecht posted a mark of 5.39 meters (17'-8.25") in the long jump, checking in with a 35th place finish, while Andrew Lummus was 36th with a mark of 5.37 meters (17'-7.5"). Sophomore Ethan Gadra impressed in the pole vault, recording a mark of 4.20 meters (13'-9.25") to finish in a tie for eighth place.
The Fords will return to action on Saturday, January 25, taking to the Ursinus Invitational in Collegeville. Events are expected to commence at 10 a.m.
