LANCASTER, Pa. - The Haverford College men's track & field team wrapped up action at the Centennial Conference Indoor Championships on Sunday at Franklin & Marshall, taking home a trio of top-three finishes as Jamie Moreland won the mile to highlight the showing. Haverford finished fifth overall in the two-day meet.
In the first event of the day to hit the track, Moreland paced the field in 4:20.21, picking up an early gold for the Fords. Moreland added his second gold of the weekend, as he previously picked up an event title for his role in Haverford's distance medley relay on Saturday. Moreland is Haverford's 24th mile champion, and the third consecutive winner, following in the footsteps of former teammate Greg Morgan '19, who captured the title in each of the last two seasons.
Senior co-captain James Barker finished just outside of the scoring, taking a ninth place finish in 4:28.62. Conor Madden (4:36.11), Nathan Leighninger (4:39.29), Amos Karlsen (4:40.19), Scott Kaiser (4:40.28), and Ryan Quenemoen (4:40.73) also each finished within the top 20 to toe the line.
Moreland grabbed his third medal of the weekend with a third-place finish in the 800 meters. The sophomore crossed in 1:56.65, while seniors Sam Ditkovsky (personal-best 1:58.93) and Hiro Kawakatsu (1:59.70) went 1-2 in the second heat for seventh and eighth place overall, respectively.
The 4x800 meter relay of Simon Perales, Jeffrey Allen, Nico Tripeny, and Charlie Ferguson took silver as the Fords pushed the baton across the line in 8:04.52, just over a second behind Swarthmore who came away with the gold. All four entrants will be named second-team All-Centennial by virtue of the strong finish. The 4x400 meter relay of Kawakatsu, Ditkovsky, Ashton Smith, and Barker crossed in 3:37.35 for a fifth-place showing.
In the 3,000 meters, Matt Katz led the Haverford contingent for a fifth-place finish. Katz crossed in 8:41.91, while teammate Sam McCalpin was just behind in sixth place (personal-best 8:42.60). Ryan Kredell (8:58.82) and Peter Buckley (8:59.58) each finished below the nine-minute mark for top 20 finishes.
Alex Reichard finished eighth in the long jump, scoring for Haverford after clearing 6.13 meters (20'-1.50"). Reichard finished his day with a 15th place finish in the 200 meters (24.05). Andrew Lummus followed up on his scoring performance in the triple jump on Saturday, placing eighth in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.68 meters (5'-6"). Cameron Albrecht also closed out the heptathlon with a seventh-place showing (2,725 points), with that stint highlighted by a second place finish in the high jump (1.72 meters, 5'-7.75").
With the NCAA indoor championships in two weekends, Haverford will now send a small contingent of athletes to the Boston area for the Tufts Last Chance Meet, which is slated for noon on Saturday, March 7. With the top 20 declared individual events and the top 12 relays selected for the championships, Katz and Moreland both figure to be in strong contention for a slot in the mile, currently ranking 13th and 14th in that event nationally. The pair will look to improve their chances further with fast times at Tufts.
