Day two split for Fords softball

CLERMONT, Fla. – The one-two punch of Cassandra Searls and Lauren Gill earned their second straight combined shutout for the Haverford College softball team in its 10-0 win over Lesley (Mass.) University Monday morning but the Fords dropped a 4-3 decision to Hannibal-Lagrange (Mo.) College in the afternoon on day two of the team's spring break trip.

Searls pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first against the Lynx (2-1) then got the only run she, or Gill, would need in the bottom half of the inning when Alison Crawford's double to left-center field brought home Beth Davis who earlier had reached safely on a bunt single.

After Lesley was held in check by Searls in the top of the second the Fords exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the inning to break the game open.

Catcher Laura Iwanyk led off with a walk and the next eight batters reached safely with all, including Iwanyk, coming around to score.

An Ashley Vanderbeck single through the middle brought in Iwanyk then Gill plated two more Fords with a a single down the right field line.

Candice Smith, Searls, Gabrielle Sapienza, Iwanyk and Laina Gagliardi all picked up one RBI each in the big inning during which Haverford registered seven hits and a pair of stolen bases.

Searls handled Lesley in three up, three down fashion in the third then gave way to Gill who closed out the win over the final two innings for the second day in a row.

Against Lesley the pair combined for five strikeouts while allowing three walks and just one Lynx hit apiece. Searls (2-0) earned the win while Lesley's Molly Sarson (1-1) took the loss.

Monday's second game saw the Haverford bats held in check until the top of the fifth inning.

Trailing Hannibal-Lagrange by a 1-0 score, an Iwanyk two-RBI single gave the Fords the lead. A pinch-hit single from Gill later in the inning pushed the margin to 3-1 but the Trojans scored three times in the bottom half of the fifth to retake the lead then closed out the 4-3 win holding Haverford (2-2) scoreless over the final innings.

Erin Delaney was 4-for-4 at the plate for the Fords, and Sapienza and Searls added two hits apiece in the loss.

Starting pitcher Lisa Karmel (0-2) threw all seven innings and struck out five for the Fords.

After a day off Tuesday the Fords head back to the diamond Wednesday when they'll play Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (N.Y.) in a 1:30 p.m. contest followed immediately by a 3:30 p.m. game against Wesleyan (Conn.) University.
