Softball sweeps past McDaniel in doubleheader

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Haverford College softball team swept host McDaniel College in a Centennial Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Fords took Game 1, 3-2, and the nightcap, 13-0, in five innings.

Beth Davis went a combined 4-for-6 with an RBI and three runs scored to lead Haverford (10-8, 4-2 CC).

The Fords scored a single run in the top of the seventh inning of Game 1 for a 3-2 victory. Knotted at 2-2, Candice Smith punched a one-out single through the right side before a Davis bloop single put runners at first and second. Cassandra Searls followed with a single to the gap in left-center to plate Smith for the go-ahead run.

Maggie Cronin (1-0) worked around a one-out walk in the bottom of the frame for her first win of the season.

Smith drew a walk in the first before run-producing singles from Searls and Laura Iwanyk staked Haverford to an early 2-0 lead.

Searls allowed just a single baserunner in each of the first four innings before Lauren Fusco led off the home fifth with a hard-hit infield single.

An error on Beth Ann Fusco's sacrifice attempt put runners at first and second before Jordan Beans executed the sacrifice to move both runners up a base with one out.

Elfert drove a ball to left-center that bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double, knotting the score at 2-2.

Cronin relieved Searls and got a pair of fly-ball outs to keep the game tied.

Doubles from Davis and Iwanyk staked the Fords to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2.

Davis led off the third inning with a single up the middle before a sacrifice moved her to second. A hard-hit ball from Alison Crawford that got through the left side of the infield put runners at the corners.

A fielding error allowed Iwanyk to reach and Davis to score before an illegal pitch and pair of shallow base knocks stretched the advantage to 5-0 and knocked Erinne Warrenfeltz from the game.

Kaitlyn Vadenais was greeted with back-to-back errors behind her to push the lead to 7-0. A bases-loaded walk made it 8-0 before a two-run, two-out single from Crawford and back-to-back RBI singles from Iwanyk and Laina Gagliardi capped the 10-run inning and gave the visitors a 12-0 lead.

An Erin Delaney RBI single in the fifth set the final margin.

Lisa Karmel (4-6) tossed 4.0 scoreless innings for the win. Cronin pitched the fifth inning to close out the game.

The Fords return home Tuesday to host Franklin & Marshall College in a twin-bill Tuesday at 3 p.m.
