Karmel, Smith help Fords earn split with Gettysburg

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Lisa Karmel pitched the Haverford College softball team to a 3-1 victory in Game 2 of a Centennial Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon against Gettysburg College after the visiting Bullets took Game 1 by a 5-0 score.

The twin bill against Gettysburg (10-7-1, 3-1 CC) was the league opener for the Fords (7-7, 1-1 CC).

Karmel (3-5) threw all seven innings for the Fords in the second game allowing just one unearned run from five hits and a walk while striking out four.

The Fords got all their runs in a three-run second inning off Gettysburg starter Lanie Parr (5-2).

Laura Iwanyk singled to left field to lead off the inning but Parr got the next two batters out before walking Marina Zambrotta.

Erin Delaney singled right over the second base bag to bring Iwanyk home for the game's first run then Candice Smith lined a Parr offering over the center fielder's head and off the fence for a two-RBI triple that gave Haverford a 3-0 lead.

Parr never let the Fords threaten again but Karmel was able to take care of business, surrendering just the one unearned run in the top of the sixth, to help the Fords earn the series split.

In Game 1 it was Bullets starter Beth McCullough (4-5) who had the Fords' number as she allowed just four Haverford hits and five walks in a complete-game shutout.

Haverford had base-runners in all but two innings but could never get the needed hit to break through on the scoreboard.

Their best chance came in the bottom of the fourth when Alison Crawford led off the inning with single up the middle. Iwanyk drew a walk and McCullough struck out the next batter for the first out.

Gabrielle Sapienza singled up the middle to load the bases but two more strikeouts ended the threat.

Starter Cassandra Searls (4-2) took the loss for the Fords pitching six innings and allowing five runs, including an unearned run, on 10 Gettysburg hits and four walks. Maggie Cronin came on for Searls to start the seventh and retired the Bullets in order.

Smith, the Fords' starting shortstop and leadoff batter, was 2-for-2 with two walks in Game 1 and added that two-RBI triple in Game 2. Delaney and Iwanyk each finished with two hits on the day and Delaney picked up an RBI in the second game.

Next up for the Fords will be a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at Washington College followed by two at home Thursday against Dickinson College and then a pair at McDaniel College next Saturday. During the 2009 season Haverford swept doubleheaders against each of its next three opponents.
