Softball splits with Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – The Haverford College softball team split its doubleheader with host Eastern University Wednesday afternoon. The Fords won Game 1, 10-1, in five innings. Eastern took Game 2 by a 5-1 count.

Haverford (6-4) exploded for six runs in the second inning of Game 1 and tacked on four more in the fifth. With three runs already across the plate in the second, Cassandra Searls belted a three-run homer to center field to cap off the six-run frame.

With the bases loaded and a run across in the fifth, Charlotte Mezoff ripped a double into the gap in right center that brought home two runs. Beth Davis grounded out to third with one out, bringing in Ashley Vanderbeck to make the score 10-1.

Searls started in the circle for the Fords and allowed just one run in 4.0 innings while striking out nine. Maggie Cronin came on to strike out two batters in the fifth to end the game.

In the nightcap, Eastern (6-9) was aided by a three-run second inning. The Eagles scored their first two runs on RBI singles and plated the third run on a Carly Rawlings sacrifice fly.

Eastern added a run in the fourth on another Rawlings sacrifice fly. In the fifth, Stephanie Weaver singled in Louise Fox for the fifth run.

Haverford's lone run came in the fifth inning with two outs as Erin Delaney doubled to center, bringing home Laina Gagliardi.

Starter Lisa Karmel was tagged with the loss for the Fords. She was charged with five runs in 4.0 innings of work. Cronin came on in relief again, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings.

Janelle Fair picked up the win for the Eagles, scattering three hits in the complete game effort.

Haverford remains on the road Thursday for a doubleheader at Rowan University. Game 1 is set for 3 p.m.
