Softball closes out season with sweep of Arcadia

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Haverford College softball team put the finishing touches on the regular season with a doubleheader sweep, 10-2 and 6-1, over host Arcadia University Thursday afternoon.

The Fords close out their season with a 17-17 mark while the Knights fall to 13-24.

Cassandra Searls put on a show both at the plate and in the pitcher's circle during the opener. After pushing the first Haverford run across the plate with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first she belted a three-run home run in the fifth inning then notched a two-RBI dinger in the sixth for a six-RBI game.

Laura Iwanyk collected two hits and picked up two RBI with a double in the fourth, and Erin Delaney added a pair of RBI with a single in the fourth and a sac fly in the fifth. In all, seven Fords registered at least one hit in the win.

Arcadia failed to get a hit off Searls until the fourth inning and the two runs she surrendered were unearned in a complete-game performance that also included nine strikeouts.

A trio of Haverford pitchers kept the Arcadia bats on ice in Game 2 as starter Maggie Cronin, Lauren Gill and Lisa Karmel allowed just one unearned run on one hit in the nightcap. Cronin threw three innings and earned the win. The three combined for nine strikeouts in the outing.

Iwanyk had a hand in the offense like in the opener, bringing in two runs with an RBI single in the fifth. Charlotte Bax' double to center field later in the inning plated the final two runs for the Fords who got their initial runs in the top of the second off a double to center by Gabrielle Sapienza. Both Searls and Iwanyk scratched out two hits apiece for the Fords in the final game of Searls' collegiate career.

Fellow senior Charlotte Mezoff also bids farewell to her career with the Fords after Thursday's sweep.
