Profs take two from softball

GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Haverford College softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to host Rowan University Thursday afternoon dropping game one by an 8-3 count and falling 6-0 to the Profs in game two.

Laura Iwanyk finished the day with four hits and an RBI for Haverford (6-6). Cassandra Searls collected three hits, all in game one, and Beth Davis had two hits for the Fords.

Rowan (11-5) jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom half of the first inning of game one and added one more in the second before the Fords would cut into the lead in the top of the third.

A lead-off walk to Candice Smith opened the inning for Haverford. Davis bunted her over to second and then Smith later scored on a misplay by the center fielder on Cassandra Searls' single into the outfield.

Rowan posted three more runs up on the board in the bottom of the third but Haverford pushed two across themselves in the top of the fifth when Iwanyk's single to right field plated Searls and Crawford who'd reached base on a walk and a fielder's choice, respectively.

Profs starter Jamie Minix (6-3) was able to hold Haverford scoreless the rest of the way in earning the complete-game victory.

Searls (4-1) started in the pitcher's circle for Haverford and gave way to Maggie Cronin in the fifth after surrendering six runs on seven hits. The loss was the first of the season for the senior hurler.

The Haverford bats were silenced in game two by Rowan's Michelle Black (4-2) who allowed just three Fords hits over six innings of work in a combined shutout with reliever Erika Knorr who closed out the win with a scoreless seventh inning.

The Fords posted their biggest threat in the top of the fifth when Crawford doubled into the right-center gap followed by a single to short left field from Iwanyk to lead off the inning.

Black was able to erase Crawford on a fielder's choice then got out of the inning with a double-play ball to third.

Haverford put a pair of base-runners on in the top of the seventh with two outs in the inning but Knorr shut the door on the Fords with a grounder to first that ended the game.

Lisa Karmel (2-5) started and pitched all six innings for Haverford allowing four earned runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out six in taking the loss.

The Fords get one day off before they're back at it again Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader against Gettysburg College that opens the Centennial Conference slate for Haverford.
