DiCandilo helps softball earn doubleheader split with Muhlenberg

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Jen DiCandilo's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Haverford College softball team a 3-2 victory and a split of a Centennial Conference doubleheader against Muhlenberg Wednesday afternoon at Class of '95 Field. The Mules took the first game, 7-0.

With two down in the home half of the fifth, Candice Smith roped a double down the left field line to set the table for DiCandilo. DiCandilo hit the first pitch she saw from Muhlenberg pitcher Angie Sisco back up the middle to plate Smith.

Fords pitcher Brittany Stevenson made the lead hold up by retiring six of the final eight batters she faced. Stevenson earned her first win of the year (1-1) with four innings of scoreless relief. She struck out three and surrendered just one hit.

Sisco took the loss with a complete game nine-hitter.

The two teams traded a pair of runs in the third inning. The Mules (13-10, 4-2 CC) scored on an error and a single by Alyssa Epstein. Haverford came back by taking advantage of a Muhlenberg error for the first run and got the second on a sacrifice fly by DiCandilo.

Elizabeth Newman and Beth Davis each went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored a run. Davis also recorded a stolen base.

Game one was scoreless until the third inning when Muhlenberg plated three runs. The big hit of the inning was a two-run home run by Kelly Kline.

The lead grew to 5-0 on a two-run single off the bat of Ashley Brewster. The Mules tacked on two more runs in the seventh.

Brewster tossed a complete-game shut-out to earn the win. She allowed four hits, while striking out seven. Haverford's Lisa Karmel suffered the defeat. Karmel gave up five runs on five hits in her three-plus innings of work.

Newman, Smith and DiCandilo all singled for the Fords. Laura Iwanyk recorded her seventh double of the season.

Haverford travels to Ewing, N.J. to take on The College of New Jersey, in a single non-conference game, on Thursday, April 7 at 4:30 p.m.
