Softball closes out season with split against Arcadia University

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College softball team put a bow on its 2011 campaign by earning a split of a non-conference doubleheader against visiting Arcadia University Wednesday afternoon at Class of '95 Field. The Fords took the first game, 4-3, and the Knights came back to win the nightcap, 5-2.

After Arcadia (22-8) jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in game one, Haverford (9-25) answered with a three-spot in the bottom of the first. The Fords loaded the bases with its first three hitters. The first run came on a throwing error. With two outs in the frame, Laina Gagliardi delivered a two-run single to right to make it a 3-1 contest.

Jen DiCandilo provided an insurance run in the fifth with a single that allowed Charlotte Bax, who walked to start the inning, to score from second.

The Knights attempted to put together a rally in the sixth by loading the bases with no outs. Fords' pitcher Claire Fitzgerald worked out of trouble by the next three hitters to pop-up, strike out and ground out.

Arcadia tightened things up in the seventh. Erin Wojcieszyn connected on a one-out RBI triple to make it a 4-2 affair. Brandee Zablotsky, the next batter, doubled Wojceiszyn home. Maggie Cronin came in to get the final two outs. After allowing a single, she got the next two batters to line out and ground out.

Fitzgerald earned her second win of the season. In 6.1 innings, she allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out three. Cronin picked up for first save of the year. Arcadia's Kelsey Roberts took the loss after giving up three unearned runs on two hits and three walks in four innings. Heather Buriak surrendered one run on two hits in the final two innings.

DiCandilo, Gagliardi, Gabrielle Sapienza and Elizabeth Newman had one hit each for Haverford. The Knights, who had 10 hits in the game, got two each from Wojceiszyn, Zablotsky, Linsdey Henchinski and Virginia Buechel.

In the nightcap it was the Fords who struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Gagliardi was responsible for the offense with a two-run single to left center field.

The Knights responded to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the second. The first two runs scored on an error, and the home was driven in by an Ashley John single. Arcadia added two more runs thanks to a double by Marissa Perez.

DiCandilo paced the Fords offense by going 2-for-3 at the plate. Gagliardi, Davis and Brittany Stevenson also had a hit. Buechel and Perez had two hits for the Knights, who outhit the Fords 8-5.

Jessica Wood threw all seven innings to earn the win. She struck out six. Brittany Stevenson lasted six innings in a losing effort. She gave up five runs-three earned- on eight hits and fanned three. Lisa Karmel pitched a perfect seventh for the Fords.
