Softball drops a pair of conference games to visiting Ursinus

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College softball team suffered a pair of defeats to Centennial Conference rival Ursinus College Thursday afternoon at Class of '95 Field. The Bears won game one, 5-2, and the nightcap, 8-0 in five innings.

In game one, the Fords (7-23, 3-11 CC) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to grab a 2-1 advantage. Candice Smith got things started with a one-out single. Jen DiCandilo, the next hitter, doubled on a 0-2 pitch to plate Smith. Laura Iwanyk followed up with another double to drive in DiCandilo.

The Bears (17-13, 10-3 CC) tied the score with a single run in the fifth inning. Ursinus took control on the contest with a three-run sixth inning. The big blow came off the bat of Amy Gentile, who drove in a pair of runs with a double.

Smith and DiCandilo led the Haverford offense with two hits each. For Ursinus Emilie McFarland went 4-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. The Bears outhit the Fords, 13-8.

Jennilyn Weber struck out nine batters in a complete game victory. Lisa Karmel took the loss. She gave three runs on seven hits and struck out four in five innings.

Ursinus jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap. In the fourth, Allison Pfrommer padded the lead with a solo home run. The Bears crossed the plate three more times in the fifth.

Elizabeth Newman, Jordan Nieusma, Smith, DiCandilo, Iwanyk all had a hit for the Fords. For Ursinus, Abby Sido, Gentile, Pfrommer each had two hits. Gentile added two RBIs.

Caitlin Whelan, the benefactor of the run support, earned the win by tossing a complete game. She struck out seven. Maggie Cronin suffered the defeat. She allowed five runs on nine hits and fanned two in four innings.

Haverford travels to Swarthmore College to wrap-up Centennial Conference play with a double-header Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m.
