Smith notches three hits on opening day but softball falls twice

TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior shortstop Candice Smith picked up three hits on the day but the Haverford College softball team dropped both of its games on the opening day of the 2011 season.

The Fords (0-2) fell to Pitt-Bradford, 5-2, in the season-opener before falling to Saint Mary's (Minn.), 11-3, in the night-cap.

Haverford picked up its runs late in game one against the Panthers.

Freshman Jen DiCandilo led off the sixth with a double and advanced to third on a ground-out to the right side. She came in to score on Erin Delaney's single.

In the seventh, Charlotte Bax led off the inning with a double and advance on an error. She scored when Pitt threw to second base on a steal attempt.

Lisa Karmel (0-1) took the loss in the pitcher's circle for Haverford.

Against Saint Mary's, the Fords jumped on the board first getting two in the top half of the first.

Smith opened the game with a single and advanced to second when Beth Davis reached on an error. Elizabeth Newman's single loaded the bases for DiCandilo who picked up an RBI with a fielder's choice scoring Smith. A Jordan Nieusma single brought home Davis to stake Haverford to a 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals wrested the lead back in the bottom of the first and scored multiple runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings before the Fords could answer.

Marina Zambrotta worked for a walk to open the top of the seventh then came around to score on a DiCandilo double.

Starter Maggie Cronin (0-1) took the loss for the Fords.

Haverford continues its week in Arizona with a pair of late-afternoon Monday games. The Fords and Panthers are set for a re-match in a 3 p.m. (PST) contest followed by a 5 p.m. outing against Wheaton (Ill.) College.
