Ospreys take two from Fords in non-conference softball action

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Laura Iwaynyk and Elizabeth Newman each finished with three hits on the day but it wasn't enough for Haverford College as it dropped a pair of non-conference softball games, 5-0 and 9-1, to visiting Richard Stockton College at Class of '95 Field Tuesday afternoon.

The Fords fall to 4-10 on the year while Stockton improves to 7-5.

Game 1 was a pitcher's duel through most of the initial four innings as Haverford's Lisa Karmel limited the Ospreys to a single run, from a lead-off home run in the top of the second, and Stockton's Brittany Giacomelli surrendered only three hits and a walk.

The Ospreys broke the game open in the fifth scoring four runs, two unearned, to push their advantage to five, a lead from which the Fords were unable to overcome. Haverford left seven runners on-base over its final four at-bats as Giacomelli and reliever Jamie Gasko kept the home team off the scoreboard.

Giacomelli picked up the win while Karmel was tagged with the loss after surrendering three earned runs, plus two unearned, on seven hits, a walk and three strikeouts.

The first few innings of the nightcap mirrored the opener as the Ospreys nabbed a 1-0 lead with a home run, this time in the top of the first, while the Fords put runners on base but couldn't push anyone all the way around to score.

A three-run fourth followed by a five-run fifth by Stockton put the game out of reach, though.

After Iwanyk and Newman collected one hit each in the opener, the pair added two hits apiece in Game 2.

Iwaynyk singled through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the third but was left stranded there, then opened the fifth with a screaming double to the right-center fence before ending the inning and the game stranded at third. Newman led off the third with a single but later got caught in a run-down for the inning's second out, and added a double in the fourth that plated Laina Gagliardi for the lone RBI and run of the day.

Starter Claire Fitgerald pitched into the fifth for Haverford but didn't finish the inning, giving way to Brittany Stevenson. Fitzgerald took the loss and was charged with eight runs on 12 hits. Stockton's Michelle Pietrocola pitched into the fifth before Bianca DiDolce came on in relief to put out one, last Haverford fire.

The Fords continue with non-league play in their next outing, a home doubleheader Thursday afternoon against Rowan University beginning at 3 p.m.
