Newman picks up pair of hits and stolen bases but Fords fall to Profs

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College softball team fell to visiting Rowan University, 10-2, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Class of '95 Field.

The loss drops Haverford to 5-14 on the season while Rowan improves to 12-5. Originally scheduled as a doubleheader between the two schools, Game 2 of the set was called after the fourth inning on account of darkness. No make-up date has been set for the game which stands as a non-contest at this point in time.

The Profs jumped to an early lead in the opener pushing three runs across the plate off Haverford starter Lisa Karmel in the top of the second inning. They added a pair of unearned runs off Karmel in the third but didn't score again until late in the game adding five runs in the final two innings off Claire Fitzgerald who came on in relief of Karmel to start the fourth.

Haverford got its first run of the game in the fifth when Rowan starter Amanda Singer walked four batters allowing Elizabeth Newman to score. Marina Zambrotta pushed another run across the plate for the Fords with an RBI single that scored Maggie Cronin in the sixth but those would be the only runs for the home team in the loss.

Karmel's record falls to an even 4-4 on the year and Singer's improves to 8-2.

At the plate for the Fords, Newman collected two of the team's four hits and on the base paths she registered two stolen bases, her sixth and seventh of the year.

The Fords step back into Centennial Conference action with their next outing, Saturday, with a trip to Carlisle, Pa., where they will take on host Dickinson College in a scheduled doubleheader.
