Softball drops non-league outing to College of New Jersey

EWING, N.J. – The Haverford College softball team dropped a 13-1 non-conference decision to the host Lions of The College of New Jersey in five innings Wednesday afternoon.

Haverford (6-18) rapped out four hits in the loss to TCNJ (17-5) but only Elizabeth Newman was able to finish the route around the base paths.

Newman led off the top of the third inning by reaching base on a fielding error by Lions pitcher Austin Lee. She moved over to second on a wild pitch and was able to come around to score on an Erin Delaney grounder to second that got through to the outfield.

The run cut into New Jersey's five-run lead but the Lions salted the game away with an eight-run bottom half of the fourth inning.

Claire Fitzgerald started in the pitcher's circle for the Fords and took the loss lasting just 1.2 innings surrendering five runs, on five hits and five walks while fanning one. Maggie Cronin and Brittany Stevenson combined to finish the outing for Fitzgerald and the pair allowed the final eight runs but five were unearned.

New Jersey's Lee picked up the win with five innings in the circle giving up just the one unearned run on four hits, a pair of walks and three strikeouts.

Haverford will continue its schedule with the middle outing of three consecutive non-conference dates, taking on host Cabrini College next Tuesday in a doubleheader match-up against the Cavaliers.
