Softball splits with Midwest teams in second-to-last day in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Haverford College softball team settled for a split of its two games Wednesday, falling 3-2 against Division II Rockhurst (Mo.) University then bouncing back for a 9-1 victory over Waldorf (Iowa) College.

Candice Smith and Erin Delaney led the offense for Haverford (3-3) on the day as both collected four hits.

In the day's opener, Rockhurst (5-6) jumped on top of the Fords early scoring once in the top of the first inning then adding two more in the top of the second for a quick 3-0 lead off Haverford starter Claire Fitzgerald.

A pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth brought the Fords to within one but that was the only offense the team could muster in the narrow defeat against the Hawks.

Smith and Delaney both collected a single and double for the Fords in the loss.

Fitzgerald (1-1) took her first collegiate loss in a five-inning outing. The freshman kept the Hawks grounded after the opening frames allowing just those three runs off five hits while striking out six. Brittany Stevenson came on in relief to start the sixth and struck out one in keeping Rockhurst scoreless over the final two innings.

The Haverford bats sprung to life in the day's closer against Waldorf (2-6) as a three-run third and four-run fifth did the most damage against the Warriors.

Smith, Delaney, Laina Gagliardi and Gabrielle Sapienza all collected two hit apiece in the victory. Delaney clubbed her first home run of the season and Smith rapped out her second double of the day.

Lisa Karmel (2-1) picked up the win throwing five innings surrendering just the one run off four hits while striking out three.

Haverford's spring break schedule in the desert concludes Thursday with a late-morning contest against Coe (Iowa) College followed by a match-up against Oneonta (N.Y.) State.
