Softball falls in a pair of pitcher's duels to host Dickinson, 3-0 and 1-0

CARLISLE, Pa. -- The Haverford College softball team suffered a pair of tough losses to host Dickinson College, 3-0 and 1-0, in a Centennial Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

Haverford is now 5-16 overall and 2-6 in the Centennial Conference. Dickinson moves its overall record to 10-10 and its conference record to 5-1.

In game one, the Red Devils took a 1-0 in the bottom half of the first inning without the benefit of a hit. They added to their advantage in the third with two more runs. The big hit of the inning was a RBI double by Alesha Sisco.

That would be all Dickinson pitcher Allison Jordan would need. She surrendered two hits to earn the complete game victory. Jordan struck out 14 batters.

Haverford starter Lisa Karmel pitched well, but suffered the loss. She allowed three runs (just one earned) on just four hits in her four innings of work. Claire Fitzgerald finished the game, throwing a pair of scoreless innings.

Offensively, Elizabeth Newman and Candice Smith each had a single for the Fords.

In the nightcap, the difference was a walk-off, bases-loaded single by Ari Coulter. The RBI single capped a 4-for-4 game for Coulter.

Haverford put together a threat in the fifth inning. Laina Gagliardi safety reached base with one out on an error. Two batters later, Maggie Cronin singled to put Fords at first and second. Red Devils pitcher Chelsea Homa was able to record the final out to keep the game scoreless.

Jen DiCandilo, Beth Davis and Cronin all had a base hit for Haverford.

Homa picked up the complete game win. Cronin struck out five batters and gave up nine hits in a losing effort.

Haverford will look to rebound on Tuesday, April 5 against Centennial Conference opponent Muhlenberg College in a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
