Fords' win streak hits six

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Haverford College softball team remained unbeaten after registering non-conference victories as part of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic over Eastern Nazarene College, 6-1, and Wittenberg University, 5-1, on Wednesday afternoon.

Surpassing the season-opening five-game win streaks by the 2007 and 2008 squads, the Fords (6-0) are off to the best start in program history.

Claire Fitzgerald (3-0) followed up her first collegiate no-hitter Tuesday afternoon with another impressive pitching performance as she went the distance against Eastern Nazarene (1-7), striking out seven and surrendering just two hits.

The Lions scored their lone run in the first to take the lead but Haverford quickly answered with two in the second. Gabrielle Sapienza drove in Jen DiCandilo for the first of six unanswered runs by the Fords.

DiCandilo went 3-for-3 in the game and scored two runs. Jordan Nieusma went 2-for-4 while Laura Iwanyk went 2-for-3. Dayle Comerford added an RBI double and Sapienza finished 2-for-2 with one RBI.

Earlier in the day, Haverford, receiving another effective performance from its starting pitcher, overcame Wittenberg (6-2).

Brittany Stevenson (3-0) ruled the circle for the duration of this one as she gave up four hits while registering five strikeouts and one walk.

Just like the initial contest of the day, Haverford fell behind by a run in the first inning. The resilient Fords quickly rallied with two runs in the second and three in the third to take command of the game. Nieusma delivered an RBI double in the second to key the offensive attack.

Haverford averaged sevens runs a game throughout its opening six-game stretch in Florida, while giving up an average of under two runs per game.

The Fords return to action on Mar. 15 when they head to Eastern University for a doubleheader against the Eagles.
