Fords set back by #11 Rowan

GLASSBORO, N.J. - The Haverford College softball team took to the road Thursday afternoon looking to continue its fast start but fell to No. 11 Rowan University by the score of 9-1 in both games of a non-conference doubleheader.

The Fords (8-3-1) showed some resolve in Game 1 by battling back to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth after the undefeated Profs (17-0) took the early lead in the second inning.

Jill Schnall got the rally started for Haverford with a single down the left field line. After Schnall stole second, Steph Wolfson brought her home with a one-out single.

Rowan's Jamie Minix (8-0) held the Fords off the board the rest of the way as she relinquished just three hits total over six innings of work. The Profs answered with three in the fourth and five more over the following two innings to end the game after six frames.

Brittany Stevenson (4-2) took the loss for Haverford.

Looking to rebound in the second contest of the day, the Fords came out swinging in the first and took the early 1-0 lead. Jen DiCandilo's double to left center provided the key hit of the inning as she brought Schnall around to the plate.

Rowan again had the answer as it scored three in the third to take the lead and added six more in the fourth and fifth to close the game out in the fifth inning. LeAnne Miller (8-0) limited Haverford to five hits.

Elizabeth Newman went 2-for-3 in Game 2 while Lauren Touey and Erin Delaney each registered a hit.

Despite striking out four Profs, Claire Fitzgerald (4-1) suffered her first loss of the season. Fitzgerald now has 14 strike outs in her last two outings.

The Fords look to get back to their winning ways when they open the Centennial Conference portion of their schedule at McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon. Game 1 of the doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
