Haverford drops pair to McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Haverford College softball team came close to handing host McDaniel College its first Centennial Conference loss of the season but it could not hold off a late rally by the Green Terror as it fell 3-2 in the second game of the twinbill on Sunday afternoon.  The Fords were set back 5-0 in Game 1.

Playing its second doubleheader in as many days, Haverford (9-8-1, 1-5 CC) moved out to a 2-0 lead in the second game of the day. Jill Schnall, who led off the fourth inning with a walk, scored on Dayle Comerford's two-out double. Stephanie Wolfson tacked on another run for the Fords when she delivered a single to bring Comerford home.

Caroline Brehm (10-4), who held Haverford off the scoreboard in Game 1, came on in relief for McDaniel (14-6, 6-0) and kept the Fords in check the rest of the contest. The Green Terror offense struck for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to keep McDaniel undefeated in league play.

Elizabeth Newman, Lauren Touey, and Jen DiCandilo registered the other hits for Haverford in Game 2. Despite striking out six, Claire Fitzgerald (5-3) suffered her third loss of the season.

Brehm, threw her second no-hitter in as many days in Game 1. Managing just three baserunners, the Fords could not cool off the freshman pitcher who silenced the lineup by striking out 16.

Pitching well in defeat was Brittany Stevenson (4-5), who struck out six and issued just one walk.

Haverford looks to bounce back on Tuesday when it faces Muhlenberg College in Centennial action. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
