Fords tie program record with 20 hits in loss to Mules

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Despite matching the program record with 20 hits in Game 2, the Haverford College softball team dropped a pair of games to host Muhlenberg College in Centennial Conference action Tuesday afternoon. The Fords lost Game 1, 6-0, before falling 17-13 in Game 2.

Haverford (9-10-1, 1-7 CC) tied its biggest offensive output of the season in Game 2, but could not overtake the Mules (11-11, 6-2) on the scoreboard in a high-scoring affair.

The Fords came out swinging in the first as Elizabeth Newman, Jen DiCandilo, Dayle Comerford, Laura Iwanyk and Jill Schnall all delivered singles on way to a 4-0 lead.

Answering with one run in the second and then 10 more in the third, Muhlenberg opened up an 11-4 lead.

Schnall began the Haverford rally in the fourth with a lead-off double. Newman and Lauren Touey and DiCandilo followed with consecutive singles to plate two runs before Stephanie Wolfson came through with a double to add two more.

Continuing the comeback in the fifth frame, Schnall led off with a single through the left side and Newman followed with a single of her own. DiCandilo drove Schnall home with a single to right and Iwanyk brought Newman home with another hit to the outfield to bring the Fords to within one, 11-10.

Scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Mules moved back out to a 17-10 advantage.

Digging deep, Haverford put together one more rally in the sixth. Schnall, tallying her career-high fourth hit of the game, singled to left field and Newman once again followed suit to put two on with one out. Comerford later delivered the big blow of the inning with a two-run double as the Fords struck for three more on the scoreboard.

The rally came up short, though, as Kelsey Jones (5-6), on in relief, allowed no runs in the seventh to secure Muhlenberg's second win of the day.

Newman and Schnall both went 4-for-5 in Game 2. DiCandilo and Comerford each chipped in with three hits while Touey, Iwanyk, and Wolfson added two apiece.

Claire Fitzgerald (5-4) took the loss for Haverford.

Earlier in the day, Kelsey Jones limited the Fords to just three hits over the course of Game 1. The Mules took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second and added five more runs in the fifth to account for all of the scoring in the contest. Despite suffering the loss in the circle, Haverford's Brittany Stevenson (4-6) held Kelly Kline, the conference leader in batting average and hits, to just one hit in the opener.

Facing the first of the three consecutive non-conference opponents, the Fords host Gwynedd Mercy College on Thursday. The twinbill starts at 3 p.m.
