Newman helps Haverford split with Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - Elizabeth Newman delivered six hits on the day as the Haverford College softball team earned a split of a non-conference doubleheader with host Widener University on Tuesday afternoon. The Fords took down the Pride, 12-8, in Game 1 before falling, 5-0, in Game 2.

Haverford (12-11-1) jumped out to the early 1-0 advantage in the top of the first of Game 1 when Newman, on base with a lead-off single, came around to score courtesy of freshman Lauren Touey's single through the right side.

The bottom of the third frame saw Widener (16-12) move out to a 2-1 lead before the Fords struck back for two of their own in the top of the fourth. Jen DiCandilo and Dayle Comerford provided the big hits in the inning to push Haverford back on top.

Exploding for four runs in the sixth, the Fords extended their advantage to 7-2 with the help of singles by Laina Gagliardi, Gabrielle Sapienza, Newman, and DiCandilo.

Haverford's bats remained hot in the seventh as Newman and DiCandilo each registered their third hits of the contest as part of a seven-hit, five-run effort in the final frame. The Pride responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning but the Fords held on for the victory.

Newman and DiCandilo each tallied three RBIs while Comerford and Stephanie Wolfson contributed two apiece. Haverford registered 17 hits overall in the opening game of the twinbill.

Claire Fitzgerald (7-4) struck out five on her way to her seventh win of the season. The sophomore pitcher now has 15 strikeouts in her last two outings.

The Fords fell short in their attempt of a sweep as Widener scored one run in the fourth and four more in the fifth to capture the 5-0 victory in Game 2. Newman went 3-for-3 with two doubles to lead Haverford at the plate. Brittany Stevenson (5-7), tossing the first perfect game in program history in her last start, took the loss in the circle.

Facing the last of three-straight non-conference opponents, the Fords welcome Penn State-Abington to Class of '95 Field on Thursday afternoon. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m.
